Build a photo and video editing setup

An editing setup is a chain, and it moves at the speed of its slowest link. A fast rig behind a bad monitor still produces work that looks wrong on everyone else's screen; a perfect monitor in front of a rig that stutters on 4K makes editing miserable. The trick is to size every part to the footage you actually shoot, not to a spec sheet. Here is the chain, in the order the decisions matter.

1. Start from the footage, not the PC

Before you spend anything, be honest about what you feed the setup. A photographer shooting 24-megapixel RAW stills has a completely different problem from someone cutting 4K 10-bit video, and a 6K or 8K shooter needs real muscle at every stage. Write down your camera, resolution, codec, and bit depth. Every choice below falls out of that line - buying blind is how people overspend on the wrong part and starve the one that matters.

2. The camera is the input

Everything downstream inherits the quality - and the file sizes - of what comes out of the camera. Sensor size, dynamic range, and the codec it records set both how good the footage can look and how hard the rest of the chain has to work to handle it. A heavily compressed codec is kind to your computer and harsh on your grade; a high-bitrate or RAW codec is the opposite.

3. The display is where editing actually happens

You do not edit in the rig; you edit on the screen, and this is the part people underspend on. A cheap panel with poor colour makes every grading and retouching decision a guess - your work looks right to you and wrong everywhere else. For editing, three things matter more than refresh rate:

  • Colour accuracy and gamut. Full sRGB at a minimum; near-full DCI-P3 or Adobe RGB if you deliver colour-critical work. Factory-calibrated, and calibratable yourself over time.
  • Resolution and size. 4K at 27 inches or larger gives you a timeline and panels without squinting.
  • Panel type. IPS or OLED for consistent colour off-axis; avoid the fast-but-shallow gaming panels here.

4. The rig that keeps up

Now size the computer to the codec from step one. For editing, the parts do specific jobs: the GPU drives playback, effects, and export; RAM (32GB is the sane floor, 64GB for heavy 4K and up) keeps the timeline responsive; the CPU handles the codec and the fiddly single-threaded work; and a modern iGPU or GPU with hardware decode for your codec is the difference between smooth scrubbing and a slideshow.

5. Storage fast enough to work from

Video editing is brutal on storage, and it needs two different kinds. You scrub and render from a fast NVMe scratch drive - working off a slow disk stalls playback no matter how strong the rig is. Then you archive finished projects and raw footage onto bulk storage you can grow.
